There’s nothing quite as charming as a crochet Christmas stocking, and this pattern is truly one of the best you’ll find! Mix and match colors as much as you want, and whip up one for the whole family.

While it may look intimidating, a stocking is actually pretty easy to crochet! Plus it’s great practice if you want to crochet a pair of socks in the future!

This straightforward guide will walk you through the simple steps to create this lovely striped crochet Christmas stocking.

About Our Crochet Christmas Stocking

If you’re looking for the perfect project for the Red Heart Super Saver yarn in your stash, this is it! The less-than-soft nature of this yarn makes it the perfect choice for a stocking. It works up to have the perfect drape and durability you need for a crochet stocking. Not to mention it comes in a ton of great color options.

Most of the stripes are crocheted right into the pattern, but the thinner stripes are added afterward with a really neat technique called surface crochet stitches.

If you’re curious about this project, have any questions, or need to know about our crochet Christmas stocking pattern, keep on reading. But if you’re super excited to get started, just scroll down to the free pattern. Happy crocheting!

Pattern Notes

Super Saver or another similar acrylic yarn really is the best choice for this stocking because it works up to be sturdy and it holds its shape better than softer yarns.

This pattern utilizes three colors however, you may mix and match as many colors as you like. One skein of each color was enough for me to make two stockings and still have a little bit left over.

The chain three at the beginning of your double crochet rounds counts as a stitch.

Color key:

  • Color A – burgundy
  • Color B – white
  • Color C –  guava

Gauge: 14 sts x 7.5 rounds = 4″ worked double crochet in the round.

Finished Size: About 20″ long and 7″ wide lying flat.

If at any point you need more guidance, check out my tutorial for mini stockings. They work up in the same way and the pictures might help you with this pattern as well.

Repeat: Sc in every stitch until your band measures 7.5″ from the starting edge.

The side facing you while you sc, is the right side (the side you want facing outward after you fold the band down).

Fasten off and turn your band inside out, so the wrong side is facing out. Then fold it down so that the right side is facing outward. Cont to the leg instructions.

You should have 20 sts at the end of row 13. Fasten off leaving a tail that is approximately 8″ long.

Rows 1-13 created a flat “hourglass” shaped piece. Fold the top half of the hourglass shape downward, toward the outside of the stocking (wrong side out).

Crochet Christmas Stocking – Surface Stripes

Use the surface crochet technique to add a color B stripe between leg rounds 7 and 8, a color C stripe between leg rounds 13 and 14, and a color C stripe between foot rounds 5 and 6.

Tie a piece of ribbon on the inside so you have something sturdy to hang it from.
