Pattern Notes

For the best results, we recommend blocking your granny squares before joining them. Blocking will perfect the shape of each square so they look better when joined. If you’re new to blocking or need a refresher, we’ve got you covered! Take a moment to read through our granny square blocking guide here.

Additionally, you should know that the chain 5 at the beginning of each square includes 2 corner chains and 3 chains for a double crochet.

Crochet Granny Square Bag Handles

These straps I found on Amazon when I first designed my simple crochet bag absolutely make this purse. Now I love them so much, I use them for pretty much every purse I make. The clips make them easy to attach, and they’re sturdy enough to hold a lot of weight.

If you’re not able to get these straps, any 22″ purse straps will likely work.

Finishing the Squares

Your granny squares may not look perfectly square right off the hook, and it’s completely normal. That’s why we recommend wet blocking them before you start joining them together.

This process will “set” the stitches into a perfectly square position so your bag will look more polished and professional.

If your squares look like these, no worries! Blocking your granny squares will make your squares look perfectly straight.

If you’re unfamiliar with the blocking process, check out our beginner-friendly guide and video here.

Joining the Granny Squares Together

Step 1:

Lay the squares on a flat surface to match the assembly diagram. Anywhere you see dotted lines, there will be a seam in the following step.

Pinning them together will be helpful as you seam them together.

Assembly Diagram

Step 2:

To achieve the “fused at the edges” appearance of the seam, we use a technique called the invisible seam. You will use a scrap piece of yarn and a yarn needle to join the granny squares together.

With yarn and yarn needle, seam along each dotted line in the diagram above using the back loops only, working in a “back and forth” fashion instead of a “whip stitch” fashion. Check out this tutorial on the invisible seaming method for guidance.

Step 3:

Once you have sewn all 24 squares together to look like the assembly diagram, fold it at the fold lines and seam up the sides (green dotted lines) using the same seaming technique.

If you want to create a completely different look for your bag, try one of these five joining methods!

Adding the Handles

After joining the squares and weaving in any remaining ends, you should have two points on each side of the bag. To create the attachment point for the handles, fold the corner down like the picture below and securely sew it down with a yarn needle and scrap yarn.

This will allow you to slide the snap through the opening to fasten on the straps.

Optional Liner

A fabric liner is a great finishing touch to this granny square bag if you’re handy with a sewing machine. I’m far from a sewing expert, but managed to put this one together in a short afternoon’s work. Here’s what I did to make it:

  1. Lay a yard of fabric on a flat surface, with the fold on the bottom.
  2. Lay the bag flat on top of the fabric, and trace the shape with a fabric pen.
  3. Cut along the line you traced, leaving the bottom fold as it is.
  4. Sew the same angles of the fabric where the granny squares are seamed together.
  5. Finish the top edges (the points) by folding down, and adding a seam.

You can get creative with your liner and add pockets to make it even more functional. Once I was happy with the liner, I hand-sewed it to the bag so there wouldn’t be any sewing machine seams on the outside of the bag. Experiment with this process and have fun!

Want to Make Your Bag More Unique?

Try using our crochet granny square flowers instead of solid granny squares! Keep in mind these flower granny squares are slightly smaller, so your bag will be smaller than this one. But can you imagine how gorgeous it will be?!

Frequently Asked Questions About This Pattern

Can I use a different yarn for my granny square bag?

Sure, as long as it’s a #4 medium-weight cotton yarn. Check your gauge and adjust as needed so the sizing comes out right. The recommended yarn amount will likely be different too.

Learn more about substituting a different yarn for a pattern like this in our comprehensive yarn substitution guide here.

If Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Yarn isn’t available near you, you can check YarnSub.com for similar options.

Can I use acrylic or animal fiber yarn for my granny square bag?

We don’t recommend using acrylic or animal fiber yarn for this granny square bag. These fibers are inherently stretchy, which will lead to a less durable bag. It’s best if you use yarn with little to no stretch so the bag is functional.

How can I make my granny square bag bigger?

There are two ways you can make this bag bigger. The first option is to use a thicker yarn and a bigger hook while following the same pattern. This method will increase the gauge of the stitches, resulting in bigger squares and therefore a bigger bag. You can learn more about gauge in our Ultimate Gauge Guide for Crocheters and Knitters here.

The other way you can make your granny square bag bigger is to add another round or two to your squares.

How can I make my granny square bag smaller?

The easiest way to make your granny square bag smaller is to make the squares with fewer rounds. Try using only 3 or 4 rounds and see if that gives you the size you want.

What other cotton yarns can I use to make this granny square bag?

Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, Cotton Ease, Jeans Yarn, I love this cotton (Hobby Lobby), Pima Cotton, and 24/7 Cotton are a few options that will work well with this pattern.
