With this project you’ll learn how to use a double pointed crochet hook to Tunisian crochet in the round, a skill you can apply to all sorts of projects. Two strands of yarn are needed to accomplish this and when you use two different yarns, the result is pretty great.

Tunisian crochet utilizes a forward pass (fwd) to collect loops on the hook and a return pass (rtn) to work the stitches off the hook. Collectively, these create a single round of the stitch pattern. You will see this reflected in the written instructions.

Before you begin, measure the circumference of your calf about 3 inches below your knee. Refer to this measurement for the starting chain.

You won’t be able to substitute a standard Tunisian crochet hook for this project. To Tunisian crochet in the round, stitches must be worked on one side of the hook and worked off using the other side.

Written Instructions


Round 1: With yarn A, ch any number of sts that measures the same as the calf circumference measurement. Taking care not to twist, join with a slst to first ch to form a ring.
Fwd: *Insert hk in next ch. YO and pull up a loop. Rep from * until approx half the ch rem. Slide loops to opposite end of hk. Add yarn B.
Rtn: With yarn B, YO and pull through first loop. *YO and pull through 2 loops. Rep from * until 3 loops rem.

Repeat: Rep fwd and rtn, once more picking up a loop in the remainder of the chain sts.

Next Round: Fwd: *Tss. Rep from * until approx half the sts rem. Slide loops to opposite end of hook.
Rtn: With yarn B, YO and pull through 2 loops until 3 loops rem.

Repeat: Rep fwd and rtn continuously until work measures 5″ from starting edge, ending on a rtn pass with only 1 loop rem on hk.

Bind off: With yarn A, *Tss and pull new loop through prev loop. Rep from * to end of round. Fasten off and weave in ends.
