About this Pattern

If you’re looking for a crochet hat that’s as pretty as it is cozy, look no further than the puff stitch hat here at B.Hooked. Thousands of people have made this hat our most popular pattern and for good reason! It’s still our favorite to gift and wear ourselves.

This project will likely give you an important lesson in gauge. Although it’s a basic hat with a simple repeat, puff stitches bring a certain level of variation from person to person. This variation usually causes puff stitches of different heights and therefore differences in finished size. Keep that in mind as you move forward.

Before you begin, review this page entirely (including gauge measuring information) so you understand the full scope of the project before you begin. To help you succeed, we have prepared a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations as well as a video tutorial and written instructions.

Gauge

First 3 rounds = 3″ diameter

It is very important that you measure gauge for this project. Follow the written instructions to crochet the first three rounds. The diameter should measure 3″.

If your diameter is less than 3″, pull up further when working the stitch so they are taller.

If your diameter is more than 3″, don’t pull up as far when working the stitch to make them shorter.

If you do not measure gauge and make the proper corrections to match it, there is no guarantee your hat will turn out the size listed in this pattern.
