About this Pattern

If you’re looking for a hat with great texture and color, you’re in the right place. Our woven stitch crochet hat uses a beautiful variegated yarn with long sweeping color transitions paired with a textured stitch for a project you’ll want to wear everyday.

With this project you’ll get to practice crocheting a hat that’s worked from the band up to the crown. The band is crocheted in a flat piece using one of our favorite ribbing stitches, then joined to crochet the rest of the hat in the round. There are no crown decreases to worry about here. It’ll draw up and add to the slouchy fit.

Before you begin, review this page entirely so you understand the full scope of the project. We have a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations here on this page as well as written instructions to walk you through our woven stitch crochet hat from start to finish.

Row 2: Ch 1. 1 sc in the BLO of each st. Turn (12 sts)

Repeat: Rep the last row until work measures approx 19.5″ from the starting edge.

Fold the band in half and slst in the BLO of each stitch catching both sides of the band. Do not fasten off. Continue with the hat sides working in the round.

The woven stitch looks different on the front and the back. We want to back of the stitch to show on the outside of the hat.

After completing the first round, turn the hat so you’re looking at the inside of the hat when making your stitches.

Round 2: Ch 1.Ws in first st. *Sk 1 st. Ws in next st. Rep from * to end of round. Do not join. Continue working in a spiral.

Repeat: Rep last round until work measures about 9.5″ from the bottom edge of the band.

Finishing

Step 1: Fasten off leaving a tail that’s about 12″ long.

Step 2: With a yarn needle, feed the tail in and out of each st along the last round to create a drawstring.

Step 3: Pull the tail to draw up and close the crown. Secure the opening with the tail and fasten off.

Step 4: Secure faux fur pom pom to the top.
