If you’re looking for a project that’s cute and fun to crochet, Layla the crochet bunny is perfect for you!

It’s easy for those who have crocheted a lot before, and it’s also a great choice if you’re just starting out with amigurumi.

What makes Layla extra special is the yarn you use. Instead of the usual yarn, I picked a roving wool yarn. It’s not the typical choice, but that’s what makes Layla so adorable!

About this Crochet Bunny Pattern

This crochet bunny pattern is similar to other amigurumi projects you might have crocheted before. You’ll crochet separate body pieces and put them together. By finishing this pattern, you’ll practice making basic amigurumi shapes and shaping. These are important skills to learn if you want to create more huggable crochet creatures in the future.

Recommended Supplies

  • Approx 375 yds; Patons Classic Wool Roving Frosted Plum (Color A)
  • Color A – Frosted Plum; 320 yds
  • Color B – Aran; 55 yds
  • 5 mm Crochet Hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Locking Stitch Markers
  • Pom Pom Maker optional for tail
  • 9 mm Shank Back Safety Eyes
  • Fiber Stuffing
  • Weighted Beads
  • 1″ Buttons x 2
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

I really like using Patons Classic Wool Roving for this project. But if you can’t find this yarn or need a wool-free option, it’s easy to substitute with another bulky weight (#5) yarn. You can use a roving (single-ply) yarn for a similar look to the pictures, but a plied yarn works well too.

Over the years, I’ve seen Layla made with medium-weight yarn as well. Since it’s thinner than the recommended yarn, use a smaller crochet hook like a 4 mm. A bunny made with thinner yarn and a smaller hook will be smaller, but still just as cute!

You can even get away with substituting with some super bulky (#6) yarns like Lion Brand Respun Thick & Quick, and Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick!

You can usually get safety eyes at your local craft store, but if you enjoy crocheting amigurumi projects like I do, I found this set on Amazon that’s really great! It comes with various colors, sizes, and even a solid option if you prefer that for your bunny.

Weighted beads are suggested because they help Layla sit properly. Something like these stuffing pellets on Amazon will work well, or if you know your bunny will be handled gently, you can even use dry rice or beans. Just make sure to put them inside a plastic bag first!

Abbreviations

This pattern is written using standard US crochet terminology.

  • Ch Chain
  • Sc Single Crochet
  • Sc2tog Single Crochet Two Together **
  • Slst Slip Stitch
  • St(s) Stitches

Single Crochet Two Together (Sc2tog): Insert hook in designated stitch through the front loop only, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Insert the hook into the next stitch through the front loop only, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook.

When you use only the front loops, you make what’s called the “invisible decrease,” and it gives a neater overall appearance. This way, you won’t notice any holes from the decreases.

Crochet Bunny Pattern Notes

This crochet bunny pattern is very much like the crochet lamb pattern you’ll find here at B.Hooked. In fact, most of the pattern is the same! If you’re having trouble understanding the pattern, I suggest watching that tutorial on my YouTube channel for guidance.

Layla is made up of 8 crocheted parts that are worked in a spiral (not joined after each round). The pattern suggests using the magic ring to start each part. If you’re not familiar with this technique, check out our guide here.

Gauge: The first 4 rounds of the leg pattern should measure about 2.5″ in diameter.

If yours is smaller, try using a larger hook size until you get a close measurement. If yours is bigger, try using a smaller hook size until you get a close measurement. Gauge isn’t as crucial to get exactly right for amigurumi projects like this, especially if yours is slightly smaller. But if yours is too big, you might need more yarn.

Finished Size: This crochet bunny will measure about 15″ tall when standing and 10.5″ tall when seated.

Not sure what gauge is? Check out our complete guide to learn all about it here.

Assembling Your Crochet Bunny

Step 1: Sew the arms to the body.

Using the tail from each arm, attach one at each side of the body opening, securing them with whip stitches. Catch the last body round stitches and both layers of the arm with your yarn needle as you whip stitch.

Step 2: Create a drawstring closure for each leg and close them up.

Using the tail from each leg, run the yarn needle in and out of every stitch. Pull tight to draw it up and close the opening.

Using an extra long piece of color A yarn and a large darning needle, run the yarn and needle through one leg, the body, and through the other leg. Run the yarn and needle back through all three body parts two to three more times to secure them. This type of assembly allows the legs to move so the bunny can be in a seated or standing position. Refer to the crochet lamb leg assembly for reference. Add the buttons on for decoration and to cover the stitching from the attachment.

Step 3: Sew the head to the body.

Using the tail from the body, whip stitch the head in place. You may find it necessary to use safety pins to hold the head in place as you work. Catch the last round of body stitches and arm as you whip stitch it in place.

You won’t have an open round of stitches on the head to sew it in place. Catch a row of stitches for best results. Refer to the crochet lamb head assembly for reference.

Step 4: Sew the ears to the head.

Using the tail from each ear, sew each ear in place with whip stitches. Safety pins are great for holding it in place as you work. Catch both layers of the ear and a row of stitches from the head as you whip stitch it in place.

Step 5: Make a Tail.

If you have a pom pom maker, use that to create a pom in color B yarn. If you don’t have a pom pom maker you can make one by hand using this tutorial for reference. Stitch the pom pom to the body with each tail of the pom, tie a knot, and trim the tails to the length of the pom pom.
