Tired of constantly buying kitchen sponges? I was too until I stumbled on a clever idea…crocheting them!

I made the switch to crochet scrubbies years ago and haven’t looked back. They’re much more economical and affordable than regular kitchen sponges.

Plus they’re a fun weekend project!

About Our Easy Crochet Scrubby Patterns

While scrubby yarns can be tricky to work with, this quality makes them excel at their job—tackling the toughest messes. Don’t let that discourage you from giving this crochet scrubby set a try. The little wild fibers conceal almost any mistake you might make due to unclear stitches.

What Yarn is Best for Crochet Scrubbies & Dishcloths?

Opt for yarns designed with scrubbies in mind, such as Red Heart Scrubby, Scrubby Cotton, and others like Lion Brand Stitch Soak Scrub—they’re your best choice. These yarns not only excel at tough scrubbing jobs but also endure numerous wet-dry cycles.

Here’s my recommended selection along with the required yardage for each:

  • Dish Scrubby Pattern: Red Heart Scrubby, 50 yds
  • Scrubby Cloth Pattern: Red Heart Scrubby or Scrubby Cotton, 50 yds
  • Face Scrubby: Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Cotton, 15 yds

You’ll also need the following supplies to crochet these scrubbies:

Crochet Scrubby Pattern Notes

Working with scrub yarns can sometimes pose a challenge due to their lower stitch definition, making it difficult to see your stitches clearly. Here’s a video with some tips for working with yarns like this. To get the hang of the pattern and build your confidence, it’s a good idea to start with smooth cotton yarn and crochet at least one scrubby before diving into the exciting world of scrub yarn options.

You can easily substitute with any “scrub” variety of yarn.

The face scrubby pattern is made up of two sections: a flat circle base, and maze-like ridges for optimal scrubbing. If you’re unfamiliar with the magic ring, check out my magic ring tutorial (plus simple hack if you just can’t get the hang of it).

When working on the circle base of your face scrubby, it’s essential to crochet in a continuous spiral without joining at the end of each round. To keep track of the first stitch in each round and maintain a tidy shape, using a stitch marker is highly recommended.

When crocheting the dish scrubby and the scrubby cloth, the chain three at the beginning of each round does count as a double crochet stitch.

Gauge:

  • Face Scrubby: The finished circle base should measure about 3.25″ in diameter.
  • Scrubby Cloth & Dish Scrubby: Measure the first four rounds of the scrubby cloth to check gauge. These rounds should measure 4″ in diameter.

If you’re still new to crochet or reading crochet patterns, and you’re not sure what gauge is or why it’s important, this post is a must-read!

Crochet Scrubbies Finished Sizes:

  • Face Scrubby: About 3.25″ in diameter
  • Dish Scrubby: About 4″ in diameter (assembled)
  • Scrubby Cloth: About 6″ in diameter

Crochet Scrubby for Dishes Pattern Instructions

Round 1: Ch 22. Join with a slst to the first chain to form a ring. Ch 3. Make 25 dc around the foundation chain (don’t attempt to work into the chains). Don’t join. Cont to work in a spiral.

Round 2: Fpdc first dc. Fpdc every st.

Repeat: Cont working a fpdc for every st in a spiral fashion until your work measures approximately 4″ tall from the starting edge. Fasten off leaving a 6″ tail.

Assembly

Step 1: Weave the tail in and out of each stitch on the top and bottom of the work to make a drawstring closure.

Step 2: Pull the tail to draw up the closure.

Step 3: Flatten the scrubby with the drawn-up center in the middle.

Step 4: Thread one tail through the center of the scrubby and tie it off with the other end. Trim the tails and you’re done!

Don’t fasten off. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), and rotate the circle so you can crochet in the opposite direction in the remaining front loops of the circle stitches.

Spiral Layers

Sk first st (next to ch 1). Make 1 dc in each remaining front loop of the circle base stitches. Since you worked the circle in a spiral, these front loops will lead you in a spiral to the center of the circle. (79 dc total)

Finishing

Fasten off and with a yarn needle, run the tail through the center of the circle to the back of the work. Weave it in by running it around the circle. Weave in the remaining end.
