You know that (slightly annoying) person who plans every minute of every day? The one who has a planner to write in, Google Calendar, Sheets, Docs and Keep for reminders and general note keeping, an Evernote account to capture every inspiration and a flutter of Post-It notes with, well, lots and lots of notes written on them?
Maybe you don’t know someone this (eh hem), structured. Honestly, I don’t know if anyone else like this even exists.
Would you guess that the person I just described is me?
I was brought up to embrace these little nuances that make me unique. As I’ve grown up, I’ve learned to develop these natural tendencies into helpful habits to promote the well-being and success I’ve found so far. There is, however, one thing I have been missing – accountability.
This part I simply can’t do alone. I can plan out the perfect year but what good does it do if I never get it done? It’s really easy to set a goal knowing the only person you’ll let down is yourself if you don’t come through. This is where you come in.
In order to serve you better in 2017, I need your help.
This year I need you to keep me accountable for the things I’ve promised, give me honest feedback and tell me how I can make this a better place for you.
Like many, I’ve spent the last week reflecting on the previous year and coming up with ways to make 2017 even better. I found that although 2016 great I can definitely improve, specifically in my role as your crochet instructor and guide through this fibery world. After all, I’m here to serve you and make your crochet experience as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.
Did I mention I have BIG goals for 2017? Everyone always says they have big plans at the start of a new year but few ever share what those “big plans” are. It often leaves me wondering if they really have big plans or if they’re just saying that because it sounds good.
Not me folks. I’m as transparent as they come. Not only am I telling you I have BIG goals for this year, I’m going to tell you every single one of my goals.
This is a big leap if you think about it. Allowing thousands of people to read my goals gives me thousands of opportunities to potentially let someone down. That is serious motivation.
That is the theme for this blog post.
As my accountability partner, here is your first “assignment”.
Read each one of my goals for 2017 below and pick the one that resonates the most with you. Hold me accountable for it. The last thing I want to do is let you down.
Goal #1 – Two (great) posts every week.
I’m so thrilled to call myself a full time blogger in 2017. For the last three years I have been running everything (by myself) after working a regular full time job. Have you ever heard the term “passion project”? Well that’s exactly what B.hooked Crochet was until this week. Now it is my full time job. Wow. It feels good to say that out loud!
This new leap has left me with an entire weeks worth of time devoted just to you and your experience here. I guess you can say I work for you now 😉
My goal for 2017 is to provide you with two posts every single week that will knock your socks off. Each month you can expect:
- Free crochet pattern & video tutorial
- Crochet tutorial for a Yarnspirations project
- (Another) free pattern (written/pictorial/tutorial)
- Crochet technique
- Informative blog post to help you achieve your goals
- Honest product review
- Crochet stitch tutorial
- Crochet basics lesson
- Reader request
This list brings up two announcements: Yarnspirations and reader requests.
I’ll be working closely with Yarnspirations in 2017.
Since I started B.hooked Crochet in 2013, I’ve dreamt of working along side a yarn company collaboratively to make your experience with crochet the best it can be. You can imagine my excitement when I received an offer to work with Yarnspirations on a regular basis!
Each month in 2017, I’ll be designing a new pattern using Yarnspirations yarn and will provide a video tutorial. In addition, I’ll also be publishing a video tutorial instructing you on how to crochet Yarnspirations patterns.
New, just for you, reader requests!
I work for you, remember? Every month I’ll be providing one post of your choosing. It could be a pattern, stitch tutorial, technique, product review…it’s up to you! Here’s how you put in a request:
Email me – firstname.lastname@example.org – and put READER REQUEST in the subject line. Type a quick, 2 or 3 sentence email that tells me what crochet-related topic or project you want to learn. That’s it! I’ll read and keep track of every single request that comes in and each month I’ll select one to feature.
Goal #2 – Publish My First Book & Course
A few months ago I introduced a handful of you to a new book proposal, Master Crochet Patterns. What I found through talking to you is that you want and need more than just a book for this topic. I couldn’t agree more.
Knowing how to read a crochet pattern and feeling confident that you are doing it correctly is the number one struggle for those in my audience. I know this because I read and listen to everything you tell me.
I have decided to offer a few options so you can customize your needs specifically. Some of you enjoy reading more than others. Some of you need hands on practice and guidance. Some of you know the basics but you need help with confidence. These things will be covered in the Master Crochet Patterns Collection and will debut later this year.
Keep an eye out for a special invitation to participate in a founders group; a limited few people to take the course at a discounted rate to provide me feedback and help me develop it into a product that is the best resource on the topic. This invitation will come through my Facebook page only. If you don’t follow me on Facebook yet and you might be interested in this opportunity, follow me on Facebook here:
Goal #3 – New Website Design
My number one goal for you when you visit bhookedcrochet.com is to find exactly what you need quickly and efficiently. I know your time is valuable and who wants to sift through page after page hunting for something. I know I don’t which is why I’ve decided to revamp bhookedcrochet.com and make it the first priority of 2017.
B.hooked Crochet is changing for the better. I have more time to give you exactly what you need. This has become my full time job and I take that responsibility very seriously. To honor this new era you’ll not only find more organization with the launch of the new website but you will also find a fresh new logo. I can’t wait until this all rolls out!
The new look will roll out on January 16th, 2017
On this day, you may experience limited down time while I make the changes on the back end. This is only temporary and shouldn’t last more than a day. After the transition, I will likely make a few tweeks as I get your feedback. These minute changes should not in any way interfere with your experience.
Goal #4 – B.hooked Knitting
Yes, you read that correctly. B.hooked is expanding into knitting!
I’ve had a calling to share my knitting knowledge and designs with the world just as I have done for crochet. I realize that you are likely here because you love to crochet. You may have no interest in knitting and that’s okay! In order to keep things organized, all knitting things will be hosted on a brand new website.
B.hooked Knitting will be very similar to B.hooked Crochet. If you like what you see here and you think you want to have a go at knitting, you’ll probably enjoy what I have to offer there too.
The first post on B.hooked Knitting will be up tomorrow, January 5th.
I’ll introduce you to my favorite circular knitting needles. You’ll be using them a lot if you get into knitting. I’ve already purchased eight pairs!
Once you have a feel for circular knitting needles, I’ll share my first free pattern!
Goal #5 – An Etsy will be open for business
Did you know that B.hooked Crochet originally started out as an Etsy shop? It provided a home for my creations and allowed me to pay for my hobby.
Etsy is an amazing platform. There are thousands of buyers surfing through the listings every day and that gives all of us the potential to turn our passion into a part time, money earning hobby. I know many of you already have an Etsy shop where you sell your crochet goods and earn contracted work. I want nothing more than to help you find success with your shop!
In order for me to help you be successful in your Etsy shop ventures, I too must walk that path. Although I have a basic understanding of Etsy, at this point I have not found what I would call success. I’m going to learn this with you. I’ll be your crash test dummy if you will.
Together we’ll see what works and what doesn’t. I’ll report my findings, good or bad, right here on the blog.
Goal #4 – In person classes
Teaching online is wonderful. It gives me the ability to reach more people than I could ever imagine. Teaching is my passion and I can’t imagine life any other way.
The one thing teaching online doesn’t allow me to do is build real relationships with you.
I want to see the excitement on your face when you master a new topic. I want to rejoice with you, laugh with you and help you find total peace with crochet. In order to do this, I’m making it a priority to organize in person crochet classes in 2017.
I have a lot of ideas swirling around in my head about this. I would like to have a couple options: short classes and daily retreats. Honestly, I can’t wait to see where the wind takes me on this one.
If you have a suggestion for in person classes, I would LOVE to hear from you! Send an email to email@example.com to brainstorm with me.
Goal #5 – B.hooked Live
Live video has the potential to bring a whole new element to B.hooked Crochet and how I’m able to teach you. I can see this as an outlet to host topic specific live shows and provide you the opportunity to ask questions and get immediate feedback. How cool will that be?
B.hooked Live will be hosted on Facebook initially but may also spread to other platforms such as YouTube or Instagram if it’s something you find valuable. You can expect more information on this by the end of the month!
Goal #6 – Podcast!!
Podcasts have been a HUGE part of my life for the last two years. I love listening and learning from podcasters and have made it a regular part of my routine.
I find that a podcast is the perfect medium for non-visual topics related to crochet. You can pop in your ear buds and listen while you crochet!
The B.hooked Crochet Podcast (name to be decided) will premier on March 2, 2017. I promise to bring you a fresh, new and helpful episode every single Thursday. It will be available on iTunes and Stitcher for free!
Goal #7 – Affiliate Relationships will become more prevalent
We have to address the elephant in the room to get into this one. We all need money in order to survive and we must make money at our day jobs in order to make it work, right? You wouldn’t work for free. You couldn’t.
I’ve made it a priority since day one to provide you the best instruction and patterns completely free. That will never change.
Because of this mission, I must find innovative ways to earn money.
Now that B.hooked Crochet & Knitting is my full time job, I have to find a way to provide for my family in the absence of my old day job. This is where affiliate relationships will provide very valuable for me.
Before I get into my plans for affiliate relationships here, let me explain to you how they work.
Let’s say you need to order something online. How about we use a new crochet hook in this example?
Okay, so you’re going to order a new hook and you’ve decided to purchase it from Amazon. You remember me raving about the Tulip Etimo hooks I use and decide to give them a try for yourself. You find my product review for the Tulip Etimo crochet hooks, click on the amazon link on that page and purchase your hook.
In this example, you did something you already planned on doing (purchasing a crochet hook) but since you clicked on the Amazon link from my product review page, I earned a very small commission.
Using my affiliate links will never cost you anything.
You will be charged the same amount as if you typed in Amazon’s URL and searched for the item on your own so you have absolutely nothing to lose.
Now to get back to my plans for affiliate marking because now that you know how simple it is for you, there is something you must know first.
I will ONLY recommend products I’ve used before from companies I know, like and trust.
I take this very seriously. When someone clicks on one of my affiliate links, they are trusting that I am pointing them in the right direction. I couldn’t possibly recommend a product just to make money. It goes against everything I stand for.
One thing you can always expect from me is honesty and transparency. I will always tell you when a link is an affiliate link. That way you can make the decision to reward me with your purchase commission. I want to earn it, not beg for it.
Affiliate marketing gets a bad reputation because there are people out there recommending products that cost a lot of money and that they have no experience with. There are even people who recommend bad products just because they earn more money from them! It’s sickening.
Use my affiliate links only if you have found value here in some way shape or form.
These small commissions will help me feed and take care of my family. It will help me to continue to do this full time. If you have before and/or you continue to use my links in the future, I sincerely thank you!
YOU are my reason
I know you’ve probably heard me say it before but I’ll say it again – YOU are the reason I’m here. YOU are my motivation. YOU are why I do what I do.
It took a lot of courage to tell you all of my big plans for 2017 but I’m serious about giving you the best I have to offer. I’m here to serve you and give you what you need or provide products and services that help you achieve your goals.
You have a voice here. When you need something, all you need to do is ask. When you send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, it comes straight to my inbox and I (personally) read every single one. I keep a spreadsheet of all requests and I respond to as many people as possible.
I hope you have a rocking 2017 and I hope you will motivate me to follow through with every single one of these goals.
Cheers for now!
