Our crochet messy bun hat has had slight modifications made to our original pattern. This includes changes to the join of each round.

It’s worked bottom-up starting with the band which is crocheted in rows. The band is joined and the hat continues in rounds.

Additional Notes: Chain two at beginning of band rows counts as a half double crochet stitch.

Written Instructions


Band

Row 1: With color A, ch 9. 1 hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in each rem ch. Turn. (8 sts)

Rows 2-40: Ch 2. *1 hdc in the BLO of next st. Rep from * to end of row. Turn. (8 sts)

Fold band in half and slst in each st of each side to secure the two ends together. Do not fasten off.

Hat

Round 1: Slst in next stitch. Ch 1. Evenly space 40 sc along side of band. Join with a slst to first sc. (40 sts)

Round 2: Ch 3. 1 dcCL in same st as ch 3. *Ch 1. sk 1 st. dcCL in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to end of round. Join with a slst to first dcCL. Break color A and join color B.

Round 3: Slst in next ch-1 sp. Ch 3. 1 dcCL in same ch-1 sp as ch 3. *Ch 1. Sk 1 st. 1 dcCL in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to end of round. Join with a slst to first dcCL. Break color B and join color A.

Round 4: Slst in next ch-1 sp. Ch 3. 1 dcCL in same ch-1 sp as ch 3. [Ch 1. Sk 1 st. 1 dcCL in next ch-1 sp] twice. *[Ch 1. Sk 1 st. 1 dcCL in next ch-1 sp] three times. Ch 1. Sk 1 st. dcCL2tog (next 2 ch-1 sps). Rep from * to end of round. Join with a slst to first dcCL . (4 decreases made)
