One of the most rewarding things I have ever done is make a crochet sweater for myself.

It took me years to finally build the courage to give crochet clothing a try. I was intimidated by the shaping, blocking, sizing – pretty much every aspect of it. When I realized I didn’t have much to lose, I finally gave it a try. That was just last week.

Yes, I admit that this is the first crochet sweater I have finished. Many have been started and exist in the abyss of abandoned projects.

So what was it that finally gave me the push?

A few things. Like many of you, I set a few new year’s resolutions for myself. Finishing a sweater was on that list. Not only was it a goal of mine to finish a sweater but it was also my goal to share the experience with you. I know I’m not alone in the “fear of sweater making” and I wanted to prove to you that it can be done and it can look good. Crochet isn’t just for old ladies anymore – the younger crowd is bringing in a whole new trend of amazing crochet designs.

The Pattern

I’m modeling a gorgeous design by Yarnspirations, the Boat Neck Pullover. By crocheting this pattern, you will get the experience of finishing a sweater without all the headaches that normally come with clothing. It consists of only four pieces – identical front and back and two sleeves.

I spent between 22 and 25 hours crocheting my boat neck pullover. Patons glam stripes yarn is a lightweight yarn, so the growth is slow but steady. Small investment if you think of the heirloom I’ve created. Totally worth it in my book.

This is a great first time crochet sweater – even for a beginner. It utilizes the half double crochet stitch throughout the majority of the pattern and a few single crochet’s at the neck line. If you know how to work these two stitches and have a good sense of tension, I’m quite confident that you will be successful.

I know many of you struggle with written patterns. I’m working on additional resources to help you through this struggle but until those are ready, you’ll want to stick with patterns that I have created a video tutorial for. This pattern is no exception. The written instructions are two pages long and if you already struggle with patterns, it might scare you off. I don’t want that to happen because this sweater is doable!

If you want to make your own boat neck pullover, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. Download the free pattern from Yarnspirations
  2. Purchase your supplies as specified on the instructions
  3. Watch my video tutorial to guide you through it

That’s it!

I hope you have as much fun making your sweater as I did. I can’t even explain how much joy I felt through the process. It’s one thing to crochet a hat or a scarf for myself but crocheting clothing that I will actually wear is a complete game changer.

I plan on making even more clothing throughout the year. If you have fun with this project, keep an eye out for more clothing tutorials this year.

One thing I want to leave you with is this – I’m here for you. I’m not the kind of instructor that provides a resource and never comes back to it. You are my students and I’m here to help you through the process no matter when you are reading this post. If you find yourself stuck at any point, please leave a comment and I will do my best to help you through it!

Bye for now,
