Eliminate the Turning Chain With Standing Crochet Stitches

crochet standing stitches

Tired of an ugly color transition? Crochet Standing Stitches are the solution you’ve been looking for.

Nobody really likes the look of a turning chain. I’ve stretched the boundaries of what is “correct” just to eliminate them from my work altogether. I’m definitely on to something and I have to share it with you – crochet standing stitches.

What is a standing stitch?

Standing crochet stitches eliminate the turning chain after a color or yarn ball transition. Before you learn this technique, you probably add on a new ball of yarn by creating a slip knot, slip stitching to the stitch you need to join to and chaining up some number of stitches. There’s nothing wrong with that approach if you aren’t looking for a cleaner way of doing things. This is where standing crochet stitches comes in the picture.

See that first coral stitch in the image just above? That’s a standing double crochet and it looks a whole lot better than a slip stitch/chain three combo. Agree?

Let’s Give it a Try

In this tutorial, I’ll demonstrate how to crochet the standing single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet. The pattern you’re working in will determine which of these stitches you’ll use for your project. It’s not a bad idea to know how to make all of them.

To get you started, crochet a swatch of any stitch you prefer. You’ll need some kind of foundation to learn how to crochet standing stitches. You’ll also need a second scrap of yarn in a different color.
