This easy crochet star pattern works up in just two rounds, making it one of the fastest projects in your crochet toolkit. I designed it so that even a complete beginner can follow along — as long as you know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet, you’ve got everything you need.

The pattern is written for one size using medium-weight yarn, but changing your yarn weight and hook size is the easiest way to make a bigger or smaller star without touching a single stitch in the pattern. How great is that?

What You Need to Make a Crochet Star

One of the best things about this crochet star pattern is that you don’t need much to get started. Here’s what I recommend:

Yarn: Approx. 6 yards of any yarn you like! Medium-weight (#4 worsted) yarn works best for beginners and gives you a star about 4 inches wide. That said, I’ve tested this pattern with everything from fluffy Homespun to super-bulky Go For Faux, and every one of them turned out great. Cotton, acrylic, nylon, and other plant or synthetic fiber yarns tend to hold their shape best — wool can get a little droopy.

Crochet Hook: 5 mm for medium-weight yarn. Pro tip: try going up one hook size from what your yarn label recommends — it helps the star lay flatter and reduces curling on the points!

You’ll also need a yarn needle and scissors to finish up. That’s it — let’s make some stars!

Easy crochet star crocheted with blue bluky weight yarn, and red and white medium-weight yarn.

After making lots of these little crochet stars, I found that using a hook one size bigger than usual for the yarn made the nicest looking star, with less curl than those made with a smaller hook. I also noticed that cotton, nylon, acrylic, and other plant and synthetic fiber yarns held their shape better than yarns with wool. So, feel free to play with your yarn and hook choices! They only take about 10 minutes to crochet, so you won’t spend too much time to get the look you want!

Pattern Notes

This cute little crochet star is available in one size only. You can change the size a bit by using thicker yarn and a larger hook for a bigger star or thinner yarn and a smaller hook for a smaller star. With medium-weight yarn and the recommended hook size, your crochet star will be about 4 inches wide. Don’t worry if your measurements are a bit different.

To make a bigger crochet star: Use bulky weight yarn (#5) and a 8 mm crochet hook

To make a smaller crochet star: Use lightweight yarn (#3) and a 4 mm crochet hook.

Red, white and blue crochet star

You can try different yarn weights and hook sizes to change the size of your star without adjusting the pattern. This is the easiest way to make a bigger or smaller star. The blue star in the picture is made with Bernat Maker yarn, a #5 weight, and an 8 mm crochet hook. The other stars are made with #4 medium-weight yarns and a 5 mm crochet hook.

If you’re not sure which hook size to use, check the yarn label for guidance. It will recommend a hook size that should work well for making a nice star. You can even go up a hook size from the recommendation to see less curling on the star’s points.

Gauge: Use the finished size to check your gauge.

Finished Size: 4″ wide

Finishing the Crochet Star

Once you’ve fastened off, weave in your ends with a yarn needle. Give your star a gentle tug on each point to help define the shape, and use your fingers to press it flat — this is all the blocking most stars need!

If your star still has some curl or won’t lay flat (this happens more often with wool yarns or a tight tension), try wet blocking. Just dampen the star with water, pin it into a star shape on a foam mat, and let it dry completely. It’ll hold its shape beautifully after that.

New to blocking? I’ve got a full guide that explains everything — you can check it out here.
