Written Instructions

Step 1: First decide on the pattern you would like to surface crochet and have a general idea of where your surface crochet stitches need to be.

Tip! If working a straight line, little planning needs to take place. However, if you are working with letters or curved lines, stitch markers are helpful when mapping out the path of stitches.

Step 2: Make a slip knot with the surface crochet yarn. Insert hk through project from front to back at your desired starting point.

Step 3: Place slip knot loop on hk. Tighten slip knot, but leave it a little loose. Pull the loop through your crochet piece.

Step 4: Moving in the direction you wish for the design you’re surface stitching, insert hk through crochet piece about 1/4 inch from last st. YO (on the back side), pull up a loop (through the piece and through the loop on your hook).

Repeat: Rep last step until your design is complete. When you’re ready to fasten off, cut the yarn and pull the tail through the last stitch. Weave in your ends as usual.
