Gather Your Supplies
- Approximately 15 yds, any worsted weight yarn (swirl only)
- Approximately 21 yds, any worsted weight yarn (swirl as motif)
- 5 mm crochet hook
- (4) Stitch Markers
- Darning Needle
Gauge and Sizing
Your finished swirl will measure approximately 3.5″ in diameter. As a motif, your square will measure approximately 4″ x 4″.
- Ch – Chain
- Dc – Double Crochet
- Hdc – Half Double Crochet
- Sc – Single Crochet
- Slst – Slip Stitch
- Sts – Stitches

This pattern can be worked using any size yarn and any hook that coordinates. If you change the size of the hook or yarn, please note that the sizing will be different than described above.

Written Instructions (Embellishment)
Round 1: Ch 4. Make 8 hdc in the first chain. Do not join, continue working in spiral. (8 sts)
Round 2: Make 2 hdc in every stitch. (16 sts)
Round 3: Hdc once into the first stitch and 2 hdc into the next stitch. *Hdc into the next stitch, 2 hdc into the next. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Round 4: Hdc once into the first 2 stitches and 2 hdc into the next stitch. *Hdc into the next 2 stitches, 2 hdc into the next. Repeat from * around. (32 sts)
Round 5: Ch 2 and flip your work (refer to video tutorial for detailed instructions). Make one dc in the back loop only of the next 56 sts. Make one hdc in the back loop only of the next 17 sts. Make one sc in the back loop only of the next 6 sts. Make a slst in the back loop only of the last stitch.
Fasten off. Thread your tail on the darning needle and work it through the center of the swirl. Continue to weave in your end on the under side of the swirl.
Written Instructions (Motif)
Work the swirl as described in the instructions above. Bind on your contrasting color in the back loop only of the first stitch next to where the swirl begins.
Chain 5 (counts as dc and two chains). 2 Dc in the same stitch. Dc in the next 6 sts.
In the next stitch, form a corner by making 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Dc in the next 7 sts.
Form the next corner by making 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Dc in the next 7 sts.
Form the next corner by making 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Dc in the last 8 sts.
Finish the first corner by making one dc in the same stitch with the bind on.
