introduction

About this Pattern

If you’re looking for a unique baby blanket that’ll catch anyone’s eye (and challenge you a bit), you’re in the right place. Our Catherine Wheel baby blanket uses a beautiful stitch pattern that works up pretty quick.

With this project, you’ll learn a technique called Bavarian crochet which is essentially working Catherine wheel stitch in the round using post stitch location. So rather than working the each stitch through the “v” at the top of the stitch, you’ll work your hook around the post of the stitch. This placement is responsible for the popped out braid you see in the photos.

Before you begin, review this page entirely so you understand the full scope of the project. We have a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations here on this page as well as written instructions and a tutorial to walk you through our Catherine wheel crochet baby blanket step-by-step.

getting started

Recommended Supplies

  • Approx 2,234 yds; Lion Brand Ice Cream Big Scoop (Color options shown: Cookies & Cream and Tutti Frutti)
  • 5.5 mm Crochet Hook

FAQ: Can I use a different yarn?
Sure, as long as it’s in the same weight category. Check your gauge and adjust as needed so the sizing comes out right. The recommended yarn amount will likely be different too.
