Gauge and Sizing

11 sts x 9 rows = 2″

Your finished hat will measure 4.5″ from crown to bottom and 6.5″ when laying flat. This baby crochet hat is ideal size for a newborn.

Pattern Notes

This crochet baby hat is worked in the round from crown to base using the front post double crochet stitch. This unique stitch pattern gives a lovely ribbing texture. You will also need to be familiar with the reverse single crochet stitch for the hat trim. If this is a new stitch to you, I recommend watching my tutorial here:

You can easily increase the length of your hat by adding more rows to the bottom before adding the reverse single crochet round.

Written Instructions

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc and center ring chain). Make 9 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join with slst to 3rd ch. (10 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2 (does not count as stitch). Make 2 fpdc every stitch. Join with slst to first fpdc. (20 sts)

Round 3: Ch 2 (does not count as stitch). Make 2 fpdc first stitch. *1 fpdc next stitch. 2 fpdc next stitch. Rep from * around. Join with slst to first fpdc. (30 sts)


Round 4: Ch 2 (does not count as stitch). Make 2 fpdc first stitch. * 1 fpdc next 2 sts. 2 fpdc next stitch. Rep from * around. Join with a slst to first fpdc. (40 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2 (does not count as stitch). Make 2 fpdc first stitch. 1 fpdc next 3 sts. 2 fpdc next stitch. Rep from * around. Join with a slst to first fpdc. (50 sts)

Round 6: Ch 2 (does not count as stitch). Make 1 fpdc every stitch. Join with slst to first fpdc. (50 sts)

Rep round 6 until your hat measures 4.5″ from top of hat.

Round 7: Ch 1 (does not count as stitch). Make 1 Rsc every stitch. Join with a slst to the first stitch. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
