Pattern Notes

This pattern is a redesign from my popular Mystic Mermaid Cocoon with changes to the fin, yarn and sizing options. You will crochet your mermaid tail in three different sections: the body, the fin and the ruffles.

In the fin section of the written instructions, the pattern is given in baby size with the other sizes in parenthesis: Baby (Toddler, Child, Teen, Adult)

The body and fin are sewn together with a tapestry needle. The ruffles are crocheted directly to the top of the mermaid tail. This technique is very easy once you get the hang of it but the written instructions can be somewhat confusing. To help with this, I’ve filmed a tutorial on how to add the ruffles:

How to Crochet Ruffles

This pattern recommends you begin your round with the magic ring. If you are unfamiliar with the magic ring, take a look at my tutorial here:

If the magic ring is your rival, don’t worry, you aren’t alone! Try the alternate magic ring. It will save you time and frustration!

Mermaid Tail Fin

Ch  27 (32, 37, 42, 47).

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from the hook and in each chain.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Dc in the BLO of every stitch.

Rep Row 2 until your fin measures 16″(20″, 20″, 24″, 24″) long. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Assembly

Find the middle of the fin by folding it in half lengthwise. Make a cut of yarn that is approx 12″ long. With a darning needle, run the yarn in and out of each double crochet stitch, leaving a tail at the beginning that measures 4″. Holding on to the tail at the bottom of the fin, scrunch the fin up to the top. Secure the tail by tying a knot and weaving it in.

Sew the top part of the fin to the body of the mermaid tail with another cut of yarn. Weave in your ends.

Mermaid Tail Ruffles

Crochet ruffles are a lot of fun and surprisingly easy once you get the hang of them. However, written instructions have proven to be very confusing! I’ve filmed a tutorial for this redesign to address the number one question – how on earth do you crochet those ruffles?!

Now, in case you’re feeling ambitious – the written instructions:

Fasten on at the back of the cocoon by wrapping it around the chain 3 of your join on the second to last round. Dc 4 more times up the chain 3. Rotate your cocoon 90 degrees counter clockwise and Dc 3 times in between the next 2 Dc. Rotate your cocoon 90 degrees counter clockwise and Dc 5 around the next Dc post. Rotate your cocoon 90 degrees clockwise and Dc 3 times in between the next 2 Dc. Rotate your cocoon 90 degrees clockwise and Dc 5 times around the next Dc post. Repeat this back and forth zig-zagging motion all the way around your cocoon. Once you have reached the beginning join with a slst to the 3rd chain. Fasten off.

Fasten on again in the same place on the back of the cocoon but skip one row down. Repeat the same steps for the previous round of ruffles. Join with a slst to the 3rd chain once you have gone all the way around the cocoon for a second round of ruffles. Fasten off.

Fasten on once more in the same place on the back of the cocoon but skip one row down again. Repeat the same steps for the previous round of ruffles. Join with a slst to the 3rd chain once you have gone all the way around the cocoon for a second round of ruffles. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
