Gather Supplies for your Easy Knit Hat
I recommend using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick for your easy knit hat. This yarn is (as the name suggests) thick and it works up very quick. It’s also very warm and comes in dozens of color options! You can make one easy knit hat for each skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick.
You will also need a 16″ circular knitting needle in a size 11 to complete the easy knit hat. That measurement is taken tip to tip, so when you order your Clover Takumi 16″ circular needle, it will measure 16″ from one tip to the other. I recommend Clover Takumi knitting needles for beginners because the bamboo material makes knitting much easier and the stitches won’t fall off the needle as easy (a common problem for beginners!)
To sew up the crown of the hat, you will also need a yarn needle. I recommend Lion Brand’s Wide Eye darning needles because they are the perfect size to feed Wool Ease Thick and Quick through the eye.
Lastly, you will need a pair of scissors. Any will do but I just can’t resist the Gingher stork scissors! Here is your round up of supplies for the easy knit hat:
- One skein Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (Marble shown)
- US 11 knitting circular 16″ (total length from tip to tip)
- Large eye darning needle

Easy Knit Hat Size and Stitch Gauge
Your easy knit hat should measure 17″ in circumference (not stretched) and will stretch to fit 22″ in circumference. When laying flat the easy knit hat measures 9″ long. Great for teens and adults.
As a beginner, you won’t need to worry too much about gauge right now. Just know that it is a very important metric in the overall size of the easy knit hat. For reference, my gauge is 7 sts x 4.5 rows = 2″ square worked in stockinette stitch. If your easy knit hat turns out much bigger or smaller than the size listed above, you may want to measure a section of the hat and compare to this gauge. If it is off, that is why your hat size turned out different.
Gauge helps bridge the gap between my particular knitting style and yours. We’re all unique! Fortunately, the easy knit hat is very simple and gauge usually doesn’t cause any issues.
In the written instructions, you will see the following knitting abbreviations.
- k – Knit
- p – Purl
These abbreviations are industry standards and are used to simplify the pattern (making it easier to read!) Whenever you see a “K” simply tell yourself to knit and whenever you see a “P”, that’s your queue to purl.
Together, we will knit this hat from the bottom-up and use a quick and easy drawstring bind off to close up the top. No decreasing required! You will learn the basic two stitches of knitting (knit and purl) and how to create a “1×1” ribbing. If you have never knitted a hat before, I suggest you to watch the video tutorial below and refer to the written instructions for guidance and to learn how to read a simple knit hat pattern.
After you make your first easy knit hat and you want to make another in a different size, you can do so! To estimate the number of cast on stitches, you will need to know the hat circumference you need. Once you have this measurement, listen to episode 35 of the BHooked Podcast to learn how to calculate your cast on number of stitches.

Written Instructions: Easy Knit Hat
Cast on 44 stitches using the long tail cast on.
Rounds 1-6: k1, p1.
Rounds 7-26: K all stitches.
To close up the top, trim your yarn leaving a tail that is approximately 24″ long. Feed the tail through each stitch with your darning needle, removing them from your knitting needle as you go. Once you have fed the tail through every stitch, pull the tail to draw it up.
Pull it as tightly as you can without breaking your yarn. Using the darning needle, run the tail around the center of the closure several times to secure it. Run the tail through the center of the hat, tie a knot and trim.
