How To Knit the Garter Stitch

garter stitch

Great texture and perfect for beginners.

In this episode of B.hooked Knitting, I’ll be teaching you how to knit the the garter stitch. This stitch is perfect for beginners and recommend that you master it before moving on to other stitches.

The garter stitch is the unique result of knitting every stitch of every row. The technique is simple and creates a stretchy, textured fabric that is perfect for many different types of projects. I’ve used the garter stitch for scarves, hats, blankets, pillows and garments – just to name a few. If you’re brand new to knitting, the garter stitch is a must!

There are no complicated pattern repeats in the garter stitch. That’s why it is the perfect beginner knit stitch. You can work the garter stitch in any multiple (meaning you don’t have to begin with a certain number of cast on stitches). Remember, for the garter stitch – just knit!

Practice Makes Perfect

The garter stitch is perfect for practicing the knit stitch, improving your speed or perfecting tension. In this tutorial, we’re going to work up a test swatch. You will only need 15-20 yards of yarn to get the hang of it. Any yarn in your stash will do and a pair of coordinating knitting needles.
