About this Pattern


If you’re looking for an easy first knit shawl, you’re in the right place. Our tranquil knit shawl is easy and somehow, calming to knit. Experiment with a few of your favorite colors and create a beautiful drape for your shoulders.

With this project you’ll get to practice a couple important knitting skills: increasing, decreasing and changing colors. We keep the stitch pattern super simple so you can concentrate on the shape.

  • Color A – Grape; approx 500 yds
  • Color B – Navy; approx 100 yds
  • Color C – Guacamole; approx 100 yds
  • Color D – White; approx 100 yds
  • US 9 Circular Knitting Needle, 24″ or longer
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

FAQ: Can I use a different yarn?
Sure, as long as it is in the same weight category. Check your gauge to make sure this substitution won’t affect the sizing and keep in mind the recommended amount will likely be inaccurate.

This pattern is worked in four main sections, from one side to the other. You’ll focus on one color and increasing first, then incorporate color changes while increasing. Then you’ll move into decreasing with color changes and finally, decreasing with a single color.

Row 1: K all sts

Row 2: K1. M1L. k to end of row.

Row 3: K all sts

Row 4: K all sts

Row 5: K all sts

Repeat: Rep rows 2-5 until shawl measures 30″ long from cast on edge.

Join color B. Do not break color A.

Next Row: K1. M1. k to end of row.

Next Row: K all sts. Break color B and pick up color A.

Next Row:  K all sts.

Next Row: K all sts. Join color C at end of row. Do not break color A.

Next Row: K first st. M1L. K to end of row.
