This cactus crochet pillow is worked in two separate pieces and later stitched together. Bernat Maker Home Decor is a flexible and stretchy yarn so your finished front and back panels will be slightly smaller than your pillow form. That’s okay! We actually want this so that our pillow form holds its shape.
This tutorial is also available in a left-handed version. Click the link below to be directed to the left-handed video on my YouTube channel.
Front and Back Panel
With color A, loosely ch 38.
Row 1 Forward Pass: Insert hook into the second chain from hook. YO and pull up a loop (leave loop on hook). *Insert hook into the next chain, YO and pull up a loop. Rep from * until you have collected one loop from each chain.
Row 1 Return Pass: YO and pull through the first loop (I recommend placing a stitch marker in this chain to help you know where to work your last stitch later on). *YO and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until you have one loop remaining on your hook.
Row 2 Forward Pass: Insert hook into the second bar from hook. YO and pull up a loop (leave loop on hook). *Insert hook into the next chain, YO and pull up a loop. Rep from * until you have collected one loop from each stitch.
Row 2 Return Pass: YO and pull through the first loop. *YO and pull through two loops. Rep from * until you have one loop remaining on your hook.
Rep row 2 until you can count 25 completed rows and end with a return pass. On the next forward pass, fasten off as you go.
With color A, make one sc in every stitch (top and bottom) and in the side of every row (sides). For each of the four corners, make 3 sc. You will use these stitches to join the two sides together later.
Before you get started on the cross stitch pattern, I recommend you download and print the diagram.
Refer to the color diagram to guide you through the cross stitch pattern. Use color B for the cactus and color C for the lettering. You may also refer to minute mark 13:25 on the tutorial for instructions of reading the diagram as well as how to cross stitch on your panels.
Crochet Pillow Assembly
With the wrong sides facing inward, insert your hook in the first stitch in the top right corner (left if your left-handed). With color A slst the two sides together by working your hook under both loops of the single crochet stitches from your border row. Work up three of the four rows, insert your pillow form and slst the final side together. Join with a slst to the first st.
