Summer Ripple Throw

The Summer Ripple Crochet Blanket by Yarnspirations really draws you in. Aren’t ripples just gorgeous? Ripples are a wonderful way to incorporate modern style with traditional roots in your home. The flow of the design, for me, invites a comforting rhythm – representing the ebbs and flows that make up our lives. What’s more thrilling than creating a statement piece that has internal meaning as well?

The Yarn

Caron Simply Soft is the star in this gorgeous throw. My favorite thing about this yarn is the big variety of colors to choose from. You can get really creative here! If you find yourself overwhelmed with the options, draw three colors from the room you’ll have your throw in.

I plan to keep my blanket over the back of the couch in our living room. The walls are painted a light blue so that was my first color choice. The colorway Light Country Blue matched perfectly. From there, I decided to stay with the calming qualities of blue but wanted a little contrast. Dark Country Blue was perfect! Just one more color to go…

When planning a summer project, incorporating colors that I associate with the season generally guides my decision. Gold really caught my eye and reminded me of sunshine but I was also drawn to off white tweed. I left it up to my wonderful Instagram community to help me decide and I couldn’t be more thrilled with their choice. Off white tweed rounded out my color palette well.

The Summer Ripple Crochet Blanket isn’t your “typical” ripple.

It’s so much more interesting! Once you dive in, you’ll see what I mean. The designer at Yarnspirations really came up with a clever way to create a tall ripple.

As with many new patterns, this one came with its own set of lessons learned. Although I’m no stranger to ripples, going about it with this stitch pattern was new. Two things worth noting that may save you some time and frustration later.

A few important takeaways…

Counting is very important. This stitch pattern is pretty straight forward but it’s really easy to get off track. Do make it a habit to count through the repeat for the first several rows. This will do two things for you – you’ll start to commit the stitch pattern to memory and avoid frogging.

Check your current row a few times as you go. It’s easy to get in a rhythm and forget part of the repeat. Particularly the two groups of 5 double crochet – there was more than one instance where I realized on the next row that I only had one group of five. Whoops! There’s no good way to hide that little goof so off to frogtown I went!

How Does it Hold Up?

One of the biggest questions I have before jumping into a project that’ll take me hours and hours to complete is, will it be worth it? If it isn’t going to hold up to everyday use, that’s really important to know upfront.

Caron Simply Soft yarn has a reputation for pilling, at least in my experience. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, that’s a way of saying the yarn gets “fuzzy” with use. Because I kept this over the back of the couch, the pilling was probably more pronounced from use sliding into a cozy position. So that’s not to say it will pill as much if we used it only for covering up.

Our cat was pretty thrilled with the new addition to the couch so this throw went through the wash a few times with no issues. It’s worth noting though, I didn’t put it in the dryer. Even though the yarn care instructions say you can, I’m always a little hesitant to do so. Hanging it over the shower curtain to dry did the trick and the throw held up really well to it. All in all, it still looks nice, even a few years later.
