I was pretty blown away by Yarnspirations July Lookbook, Foodie Baby! There are so many cute projects, not only for babies but pets too! Because I knew my niece would look absolutely adorable in the Ice Cream Swirl hat, I just had to make one for her.
This pattern calls for one of my favorite go-to acrylics, Simply Soft. Because it’s often on sale and it’s just so darn affordable, I have more in my stash than I care to admit!
Since my favorite ice cream is raspberry chocolate chip, I chose Fuschia and Chocolate for my first hat with off white as the “cone”. I was surprised by how quickly this little pattern worked up!
Although Simply Soft yarn is perfectly soft enough for my niece’s little noggin, I couldn’t help but wonder what this pattern would look like using Bernat Pop! yarn, a self-striping yarn. I found this ball of planetary in my stash and went to it!
Seriously, how gorgeous is this? Not only am I a huge fan of gray but lime green and purple too? Yes, please!
So the first hurdle was to figure out how the color transitions would “play” with the Ice Cream Swirl Hat pattern. I knew the amount of yarn in a ball of Bernat Pop was more than I would need. This told me that I wouldn’t cycle through the entire color palette.
I knew I wanted to incorporate all five colors which meant at some point I would have to break the yarn. There was a little planning involved but for the most part, I worked through the pattern and when I felt I had enough of one color, broke the yarn (saving a few yards for another project) and fastened on again when I reached the next color.
In total, I made two cuts – one after finishing the cone portion of the pattern and once after the dark gray. Each time I made a cut I saved a portion of the yarn, rolling it in a ball to save for later. This is what was left over – plenty to make a second hat!
Now since the hat is primarily green, I figured a great way to incorporate the purple was to add sprinkles. Who doesn’t want sprinkles on their ice cream?! For a little extra pop, I embroidered a few white sprinkles too.
Overall, I’m so impressed with the outcome!
Now I’m not quite sure what flavor of ice cream this is. Perhaps pistachio?
I love how you can take a pattern and with a little change of yarn, can turn it into something so unique and different. I would love to see your Ice Cream Swirl Hats! With so many color choices for Simply Soft and Bernat Pop! yarn, I know you’ll come up with something completely unique!
