Gather Your Supplies
This pattern was written and tested for Lion Brand Vel-Luxe yarn which really makes it come to life. This yarn is so incredibly soft and warm!
If you choose to substitute yarn for this project, I recommend using a worsted weight yarn.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 skein Lion Brand Vel-Luxe yarn (Eggplant shown)
- 5.5 mm Crochet Hook
- Darning Needle

Each boot topper is worked as a flat rectangle and joined to form a tube. Working stitches in the back loop create the ribbed texture you see.
My tips for working with fuzzy yarn:
- Always count your stitches as you work
- use your fingers to feel where the stitch should be worked
- Use the band that runs through the yarn to help identify the “V” to help you with your stitch placement.
When working with fuzzy yarns, their worst quality (not being able to see the stitches) is also their best quality – they conceal mistakes very well!
As long as your edges are straight, this yarn will conceal many of the mistakes you may make throughout this project. Stick with it! The results are worth it!
Chain one at beginning of row does not count as a stitch.
How to make these quick crochet boot toppers
This tutorial is also available in a left-handed version. Click the link below to be directed to the left-handed video on my YouTube channel.
Crochet Boot Topper Instructions
Row 1: Ch 25. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch. Ch 1 and turn. (24 sts)
Row 2: Hdc in the BLO of the first st. Hdc in the BLO of each rem st.
Rep last row until your work measures about 11″ from starting edge. Do not fasten off
Check the sizing at this point. Wrap it around your ankle and make sure it’s not too loose or too tight. Add or remove rows if needed to adjust the circumference.
Fold the two sides together and slst in each stitch (from last row worked) and each chain (from starting edge) to attach the two ends together. (Minute Mark 3:40)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
