About this Pattern

When you need a quick handmade gift for the holidays, upcoming birthday party or wedding, our knit wine bottle sweater is a great option. You can have one of these made in one or two productive evenings to gift with a bottle of wine.

This wine bottle sweater will fit most (but not all) 750 mL wine bottles. With this project you’ll get the opportunity to explore 9″ circular needles and practice a basic rib stitch. If you want to incorporate stripes, we’ll show you an easy hack to conceal the color jog so your stripes are nice and even. However, you can be as creative as you want with this project; change the stripe pattern or keep it a solid color. It’s up to you!

Before you begin, review this page entirely so you understand the full scope of the project. We have a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations here on this page as well as written instructions and a tutorial to walk you through our knit wine bottle sweater from start to finish.

getting started

Recommended Supplies

  • Approx 70 yds total; Red Heart Chic Sheep (Colorways pictured: Linen & Lipstick)
  • Color A – approx 40 yds
  • Color B – approx 30 yds
  • US 6 Circular Knitting Needles, 9″
  • Stitch Marker

FAQ: Do I have to use circular needles?
You can use double pointed needles or magic loop if you prefer these methods of knitting in the round (or if you don’t have the circular needle size recommended). Just keep in mind, the instructions are written for circular needles so there won’t be a break down of stitches per needle.

Additional Notes

Finished Size

8.5″ long; 6.5-9.5″

11 sts x 16 rounds = 2″
(2×1 rib not stretched)

This wine bottle sweater is knit as a long, cylindrical piece. Keep in mind, it will fit most (but not all) 750 mL wine bottles. It will not fit bottles that are larger than 9.5″ in circumference. Take a quick measurement of your wine bottle before getting started to make sure it will fit.

If the neck of your wine bottle is longer than usual, making the “to be covered” section shorter than 8″, simply knit fewer rounds than indicated. You will likely need to make adjustments to the stripe pattern.
