About Our Crochet Snood Scarf Pattern

If you have extremely cold winters where you live, a snood scarf is a must! What is essentially just a wide cowl, a snood doubles to wrap completely around your head for a fit that’s even warmer than a hood.

With this project, you’ll learn one of our favorite stitches; a stretchy rib-like stitch that looks like the stockinette stitch. Make yours solid, striped, or a combination of colors. The sky is the limit with this flexible pattern.

Pattern Notes

Our crochet snood scarf starts with a row of foundation single crochet stitches, and the row is joined to form a large tubular round. After the initial join of the row to form a round, you won’t join at the end of the subsequent rounds.

If you prefer chains instead of foundation single crochet stitches, make 191 chains at the start of the pattern, and join with a slst to the first chain. Then chain one and single crochet in each st. Don’t join at the end of the round. Cont with row 2 in the pattern.

To make a three-colored snood like ours, you’ll need 255 yds of each color. If you use Red Heart Super Saver Brushed, that’s one skein each.

We love Super Saver Brushed yarn for this snood scarf because of the soft halo it creates. But if you want to use another yarn, see our other favorite yarns for scarves in this post here.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crochet Snood Scarves

What size is a crochet snood scarf?

In general, a snood scarf should be wide enough to reach from your hairline at your forehead, down to just below the base of your neck. This is anywhere from 12″ to 16″ for an adult. The circumference of the snood should be big enough to double around your neck and be comfortable to wear. This is anywhere from 50″ to 60″ (25 to 30″ lying flat when measuring) for an adult.

What is the ideal length for a snood?

The length of the snood should double to wrap comfortably around your neck and be comfortable to wear. This is anywhere from 50″ to 60″ for an adult.

How much yarn do I need to make a snood?

Our crochet snood scarf requires 765 yards of yarn. Other patterns may require a different amount depending on the yarn, stitch, and hook size used. For more information about how to figure out how much yarn you need, listen to this episode of our podcast.

What is the difference between a snood and a cowl?

The difference between a snood scarf is size and function. A snood scarf and cowl are similar in their construction – both are tubular scarves, but the snood is larger so it can double to be worn as a hood.
